Understanding the Breadboard

How to connect components together without soldering.

The breadboard is full of holes. The side holes (next to the red and blue lines) are connected lengthwise and are used to distribute power (positive and negative) across the entire board. The holes in the middle are connected horizontally in short rows of 5 holes and are used to connect components together. Remember that the middle is separated by a 'ravine' that divides the left side from the right.

Wiring Notes

To power an external LED, connect the positive lead (Anode — the long leg) to 5V through a resistor, and the negative lead (Cathode — the short leg) to GND.

Common Mistakes

Inserting both legs of a component (like an LED) into the same horizontal row, creating a short circuit between the two legs with no current flowing through it.
